BRUNSWICK, Georgia: April 6, 2022—On March 30, Southeast Georgia Health System celebrated National Doctors’ Day by paying tribute to the physicians that impact our lives. Physicians worldwide face challenges with resilience and bravery, often prioritizing their patients above their own health and safety. Through their actions, whether it be an encouraging word, a kind bedside gesture, or a life-saving procedure, they make a difference each day.
To honor the Brunswick Campus medical staff, the Health System made a $2,500 donation to FaithWorks. This community-based ecumenical ministry focuses on community health care services and poverty needs in Glynn County and the surrounding southeast Georgia region. Established in 1995 as a ministry of the United Methodist Church, more than 85 churches, 170 businesses and 51 service organizations now support and participate in the fulfillment of FaithWorks’ mission to foster relationships and community spirit by connecting people to eliminate prejudice and to heal brokenness.
The Camden Campus medical staff were similarly honored through a $2,500 donation to the Miracle League of Camden County. Believing that “every child deserves a chance to play ball,” the Miracle League provides opportunities for children with disabilities to play baseball, regardless of their abilities. Established in 2011, the Miracle League field, named Justin’s Miracle Field in honor of Justin Norris, promotes community support and sponsorship and provides the facilities that meet the unique needs of the Miracle League players and their families.
Conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of physician Charles B. Almond, M.D., Doctors’ Day honors physicians, their work, and their contributions to society and the communities they serve. Eudora encouraged the community to mail greeting cards and place red carnations, the symbolic flower for Doctors’ Day, on the graves of deceased doctors on the first celebration on March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia. President George Bush officially designated March 30 as National Doctors’ Day in 1990.
